Cover Crop Contributions to Improve the Soil Nitrogen and Carbon Sequestration in Almond Orchards (SW Spain)

چکیده
Almond (Prunus dulcis Mill. [D.A. Webb]) is the third most widely spread crop in Spain and has traditionally been cultivated marginal areas shallow soils under rainfed conditions. However, it recently progressively introduced flat irrigated areas. The implementation of cover crops inter-rows woody proven as a suitable strategy to reduce runoff soil erosion but they also can boost quality health. A field experiment was conducted during two-monitoring seasons examine nitrogen carbon sequestration potential three seeded [barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth), mixture 65% barley 35% vetch] control spontaneous flora almond orchards (SW Spain). Here, we show that provided highest biomass amount, followed by covers, vetch, treatment. Also, covered faster growing stage, its residues were decomposed easier than treatments decomposition period after mowing, providing less protection when risk water with autumn rainfall high. On other hand, improved nitrate content over respect at 0–20 cm depth throughout studied period. In addition, greater input determined plot. That is, had higher for sequestration, augmenting organic more 1.0 Mg ha−1 study Thus, taking into consideration findings present experiment, establishment would be advisable mitigate erosion, enhancing fertility plantations Mediterranean semi-arid regions.

water is the most limiting factor in irrigated agriculture, mainly in mediterranean environments, as in the case of southwest spain. in this area, almond is one of the most valuable crops due to its high drought tolerance. this work examines the crop coefficients (kc) based on four drainage lysimeters installed in an experimental young almond orchard. complementary, two deficit-irrigation treat...
متن کاملCover crop root contributions to soil carbon in a no-till corn bioenergy cropping system
Crop residues are potential biofuel feedstocks, but residue removal may reduce soil carbon (C). The inclusion of a cover crop in a corn bioenergy system could provide additional biomass, mitigating the negative effects of residue removal by adding to stable soil C pools. In a no-till continuous corn bioenergy system in the northern US Corn Belt, we used CO2 pulse labeling to trace plant C from ...
متن کاملThe myth of nitrogen fertilization for soil carbon sequestration.
Intensive use of N fertilizers in modern agriculture is motivated by the economic value of high grain yields and is generally perceived to sequester soil organic C by increasing the input of crop residues. This perception is at odds with a century of soil organic C data reported herein for the Morrow Plots, the world's oldest experimental site under continuous corn (Zea mays L.). After 40 to 50...
